How to Choose an Ad Video Production Company in India for Your D2C Brand

A good ad video sells on Meta and YouTube. A bad one just looks nice. Here is how to pick the right production partner and test them before you commit.

Three kinds of company sell ad videos in India

Search for an ad video production company in India and you will find three very different businesses on the same results page. They solve different problems. Most bad hires happen because a founder picked the wrong type, not the wrong company.

Work out which type you need before you compare anyone.

What a D2C ad video actually has to do

A TV commercial gets 30 seconds of a captive audience. A Meta ad gets about a second before the thumb moves on. So the brief for a D2C ad video is different from a brand film brief.

On Meta the ad decides who sees it as much as the targeting does. The platform reads the video and finds people who respond to it. That means your production partner is shaping your audience, not just your look. Read more on this in our guide to UGC ads vs studio ads.

  • A hook in the first three seconds. The problem, the result or the product in hand, shown right away.
  • Vertical 9:16 first, with 4:5 and 1:1 cuts for feed placements and 16:9 only if you run YouTube in-stream.
  • Burned-in captions, because a lot of people scroll with the sound off.
  • Safe zones respected, so the Reels caption and buttons do not cover the text or the product.
  • One message and one offer per video. Three benefits in fifteen seconds lands as none.
  • Several hooks per body. The same middle and end with three or four different openings is the cheapest way to test.

Questions to ask before you sign

Show reels tell you very little. Every company has a nice one. These questions show how a team actually works.

  • Which of these ads made money, and how do you know? If they cannot talk about hook rate, hold rate or cost per purchase for their own work, they make videos, not ads.
  • Who writes the scripts, and from what? Good answers mention customer reviews, comments, return reasons and past ad data. Weak answers mention mood boards only.
  • How many versions come out of one shoot day? Ask for the exact list of deliverables: lengths, ratios, hooks and language versions.
  • What is the turnaround from approved script to final files? Ads tire fast, so a team that needs a month per batch will leave you running stale creative.
  • Who reviews the cut against Meta's specs? Text placement, safe zones, captions and audio levels should be checked before you see it.
  • What happens when an ad does not work? You want a team that re-cuts and re-hooks based on results, not one that treats delivery as the end of the job.

Rights, raw footage and music: settle these in writing

This is where Indian D2C brands most often get stuck months later. A video that works can run for a long time, and you do not want a takedown or a fresh negotiation in the middle of a sale.

  • Usage rights for creators and on-camera talent. Agree the platforms (Meta, YouTube, website, marketplace listings), the duration and whether paid ads are covered. Organic posting rights and paid ad rights are not the same thing.
  • Raw footage and project files. Ask whether you get the unedited footage. Without it, no other editor can re-cut your best performing shoot.
  • Music. A Bollywood or trending track you heard on Reels is not cleared for ads by default. Use licensed stock music, Meta's Sound Collection for Meta ads, or an original track.
  • Whitelisting or partnership ads. If ads will run from a creator's handle, get written consent and agree how long the access lasts.
  • Fonts, stock clips and voiceovers. These carry their own licences. The company should confirm all of them are cleared for commercial use.

Claims and compliance in India

A production partner who writes your scripts is also writing your ad claims. In India those claims are covered by the ASCI code, and by category rules such as FSSAI's rules on food claims and the restrictions on drug and remedy advertising. Meta also reviews ads against its own policies, and rejected ads cost you time.

Ask the company how they handle this. The right answer is a script check before the shoot, not a fix in the edit.

  • Every claim in the script (fastest, best, clinically proven, no side effects) needs proof you can show.
  • Beauty and skincare before and after shots should not be retouched in a way that exaggerates the result.
  • Food, supplement and wellness scripts should avoid cure or treatment language.
  • Creator content posted from the creator's own handle needs a clear disclosure label under ASCI's influencer guidelines.
  • Countdown timers and fake scarcity in the video can fall under the government's dark pattern guidelines, so keep any urgency real.

Red flags

  • The show reel is all landscape brand films and no vertical ads.
  • They promise a guaranteed ROAS or a fixed result from the video alone. Results depend on the offer, the landing page and the media buying too.
  • No scriptwriting step: the creator just "does their thing" from a two-line brief.
  • Only one final version per concept, with no hook variations.
  • They will not say who owns the raw footage or the talent rights.
  • No interest in seeing your ads account results after delivery.

Run a small trial before a long contract

You do not need a long commitment to judge a production partner. One focused batch will show you how they think.

  • Pick one hero product with steady sales, so the result is about the video and not the product.
  • Brief one or two concepts, with at least three hooks each and two lengths.
  • Run them against your current best ad in the same campaign, using a clean testing setup like our creative testing framework.
  • Give the test enough spend and days to exit learning before you judge it.
  • Judge the process too: how many rounds of edits, how fast, and whether they suggested the next batch from the data.

How to judge the videos once they are live

Likes and comments on an ad are a weak signal. Read the numbers in the order a viewer experiences the ad.

  • A strong hook with a weak hold means the middle needs a re-cut, not a new shoot.
  • Good clicks with poor purchases often point to the landing page or tracking, not the video. Our clicks but no sales checklist covers what to check.
  • Rising frequency with a falling CTR means the ad is tiring. Your production partner should already be working on the next batch.
StageWhat to look atWhat it tells you
First 3 secondsHook rate: 3-second views divided by impressionsWhether the opening stops the scroll
MiddleHold rate: views to the end, or average watch timeWhether the story keeps attention
ClickCTR and CPCWhether the offer and call to action land
PurchaseCost per purchase and ROASWhether the video brings buyers, not just viewers

Questions

Should a D2C brand hire an ad film production house or a performance creative team?

If you need a launch film or a TV and YouTube piece, a production house fits. If most of your sales come from Meta and Google Ads, you need a team that writes for hooks, makes many versions and looks at ad results.

How many ad videos does a D2C brand need each month?

It depends on spend and how fast your ads tire, so there is no fixed number. Watch frequency and CTR, and plan new batches before your best ads start falling off.

Do I own the ad videos a production company makes for me?

Only what your contract says. Get usage rights for talent and creators, music licences and access to raw footage agreed in writing before the shoot.

Can I use a trending Instagram song in my ad?

Usually not. Trending songs are licensed for personal posts, not for paid ads, so use licensed stock music, Meta's Sound Collection or an original track.

Is UGC better than studio ads for D2C brands in India?

Neither wins every time. Creator-style videos usually carry prospecting and testing, while studio and lifestyle videos lift the brand and help retargeting. Most accounts need both.
