Dynamic Product Ads vs Static Ads on Meta: Which Should D2C Brands in India Run?
Catalogue ads and static ads do different jobs. Here is when each one wins, how to set them up for an Indian store, and how to compare them fairly.
The short answer
Most founders ask which format converts better. That is the wrong question. Dynamic product ads and static ads do different jobs, so each one wins in a different place.
Dynamic product ads (Meta now calls them Advantage+ catalog ads) pull products from your catalogue and show each person the items they viewed, added to cart or are likely to want. Static ads are a single image or video you design, with one message and one offer.
For people who already looked at a product, a catalogue ad usually wins because it shows them the exact thing they wanted. For people who have never heard of you, a designed static or video ad usually wins because it gives them a reason to care. Most D2C accounts in India need both.
How the two formats differ
| Dynamic product ads | Static ads | |
|---|---|---|
| What the person sees | Products picked from your catalogue for them | The one image or video you chose |
| Creative control | Low: Meta assembles it from feed images, titles and prices | Full: you control every word and frame |
| Best job | Retargeting, cart recovery, cross-selling | Cold traffic, launches, offers, hero products |
| Works best with | Large catalogues, many variants, stock that changes often | Small catalogues, products that need explaining |
| Main risk | Looks like a marketplace listing and gets ignored | Shows the wrong product to someone who wanted another |
| What it depends on | A clean feed and tracking that matches product IDs | Strong design and a clear message |
When dynamic product ads win
- Big catalogues. A fashion or jewellery store with hundreds of SKUs cannot design an ad for each one. The catalogue does it for you.
- Many variants. Sizes, colours and finishes. Someone who looked at a maroon kurta in M should see that kurta, not your bestseller.
- Stock that moves fast. When a product sells out, a synced catalogue stops showing it. A static ad keeps spending on it until someone notices.
- Cart and checkout recovery. People who added to cart but did not buy respond to seeing the same item again, with the price and any offer on it.
- Cross-selling. Show past buyers products that go with what they bought, such as a matching dupatta or a refill pack.
When static ads win
- Small catalogues. If you sell three to five products, the catalogue has little to personalise. A well-made ad for each hero product will do more.
- Products that need explaining. A skincare serum, a kitchen appliance or a supplement needs a demo, a before and after, or a reason to believe. A product photo on white cannot do that.
- Launches and festive offers. Diwali, Raksha Bandhan and sale days need one clear message. Design it once and push it hard.
- Trust messages. First-time buyers in India often want to know about COD, easy returns and delivery time. You can put these into the creative itself instead of hoping they read the caption.
- Premium positioning. Fine jewellery and premium home products need styling and setting. Catalogue ads built from plain packshots can make them look cheap. For the video side of this, see performance ads videos.
Setting up catalogue ads properly for an Indian store
Most catalogue ads that fail in India fail on setup, not on the format. Check these before you judge the results.
- Sync the catalogue from your store. Connect your store platform to Meta Commerce Manager through its official integration so prices, stock and new products update on their own. Check Commerce Manager for rejected or missing items every week.
- Match product IDs in tracking. The content IDs sent by your pixel and Conversions API must match the IDs in your catalogue, at the variant level. If they do not match, Meta cannot tell who viewed what and retargeting breaks. Our Meta CAPI setup guide covers this step by step.
- Fix the images. Marketplace-style packshots on white blend into every other ad. Add lifestyle images to the feed, and use catalogue frames or overlays for price drops, offers or free delivery.
- Write titles for the phone. Long titles get cut off. Put the product type and the key detail (colour, fabric, size range) first.
- Use catalogue product video where you have it. Meta can now show product videos inside catalogue ads. A short clip of the product being worn or used beats a still photo for most categories.
- Remove what you do not want to sell. Exclude low-margin items, single leftover sizes and products with high return rates through product sets.
Product sets and audiences that work
Meta has moved catalogue ads towards Advantage+ audience and away from hand-picked interests. You still get control, but through product sets, custom audiences and exclusions rather than detailed targeting. These are the setups we use most often:
- Viewed but did not buy, last 7 to 14 days. The core retargeting set. Keep the window short for impulse categories and longer for considered ones like jewellery or appliances.
- Added to cart but did not buy. A smaller, warmer group. Lead with the offer or a COD and returns line.
- Past buyers, cross-sell. Show related products and exclude what they already bought.
- Bestsellers to broad audiences. A product set of proven sellers lets the catalogue prospect without showing new visitors your weakest items.
- Always exclude recent purchasers from cart recovery, or you will pay to show people what they just bought.
Running both together
The best results usually come from letting the two formats do their own jobs. Static and video ads bring new people in and give them a reason to visit. Catalogue ads follow up with the exact products they looked at.
In practice, that means your prospecting campaigns carry mostly designed creative, and your retargeting carries catalogue ads with a few static ads for offers and trust. Inside a single Advantage+ sales campaign you can also put catalogue ads next to your static and video ads and let Meta deliver to whoever fits. Watch which ads get the spend, and check who each one is actually being shown to.
Your static creative also feeds your catalogue ads. If a lifestyle photo or a short clip works as a static ad, add it to the catalogue as an extra image or video. Our creative testing framework explains how to find those winners.
How to compare them fairly
Catalogue retargeting nearly always shows a higher ROAS than prospecting with static ads. That does not mean it is the better format. It is shown to people who were already close to buying, and some of them would have bought anyway. Ads Manager gives it the credit regardless.
Compare like with like. Put a static or video ad and a catalogue ad on the same retargeting audience and look at cost per purchase over at least a week. For prospecting, compare a bestseller catalogue set with your best designed ad on the same broad audience.
Then check what happens to total revenue when you change the spend. If you double catalogue retargeting and your store orders barely move, you are paying for sales you would have got anyway. This is also why ROAS can fall when you push more money into one format. See why ROAS drops when scaling ad spend.

Questions
Are dynamic product ads the same as Advantage+ catalog ads?+
Yes. Meta renamed dynamic product ads to Advantage+ catalog ads. They work the same way: ads built from your product catalogue and shown based on what each person browsed or is likely to buy.
Do dynamic product ads work for a brand with only a few products?+
They can work for cart recovery, but there is little to personalise with three to five products. A small brand usually does better putting that effort into strong static and video ads for each hero product.
Why are my catalogue ads not showing the products people viewed?+
The most common cause is a mismatch between the product IDs your pixel or Conversions API sends and the IDs in your catalogue. Check the event match in Events Manager and make sure both use the same variant IDs.
Can I use dynamic product ads to reach new customers?+
Yes. Point a catalogue ad at a broad audience with a product set of your bestsellers and exclude past visitors and buyers. It works best when your feed has good lifestyle images or product videos, not just packshots.
Should I show the price and discount in catalogue ads?+
For retargeting, usually yes. People who already viewed the product respond to seeing the price and any drop. Use catalogue overlays for this, and keep the badge simple so it stays readable on a phone.
