Fashion brand marketing strategy in India
How D2C fashion and apparel brands in India sell online: fit, catalogue ads, drops and sales, and returns.
Fashion is the largest D2C category in India and the most crowded. Most brands can make good clothes; the ones that grow are the ones that solve fit, show the product on real bodies, and manage returns as carefully as they manage ad spend.
What makes fashion different
- Fit decides the sale and the return. Size charts, fit notes and the model's height and size belong on the ad and the product page.
- Catalogues are large and change fast. New drops, colourways and sizes going out of stock mean the ads have to follow the catalogue.
- Discount seasons train buyers. End of season sales, festive sales and marketplace events shape when people buy.
- Marketplaces sit next to the brand site. Myntra, Ajio, Amazon and Flipkart are part of the same customer's journey.
The funnel that works
- Catalogue ads on Meta. Advantage+ catalogue ads show each person the products closest to what they viewed. They need a clean feed: correct sizes, stock, prices and good images.
- Video for the hero products. Try-ons, styling and fabric close-ups for the few products that carry the season.
- Google Shopping and Performance Max for people searching a product type, a fabric or an occasion.
- Retargeting with fit and reviews. Customer photos, size advice and the exchange policy for people who viewed but did not buy.
Ads videos that sell fashion
- Try-on hauls on different body types, with the size worn on screen.
- One piece styled three ways: office, weekend, occasion.
- Fabric close-ups: texture, stretch, how it falls and how it washes.
- The drop story: what is new, why it was made, how many are left.
- Creators wearing the product in their own life, which reads as a recommendation.
- Occasion edits for ethnic wear: festivals, weddings and pujas.
The calendar
| Window | What it means for ads |
|---|---|
| End of season sales (Jan, Jun to Jul) | Clearance; catalogue ads and urgency. |
| Eid, Durga Puja, Navratri | Ethnic and occasion wear; regional creative matters. |
| Diwali (Oct or Nov) | The biggest festive window; gifting and new outfits. |
| Wedding season (Nov to Feb) | Occasion wear; higher order values. |
| New drops (all year) | Launch to warm audiences first, then go broad. |
Returns are a marketing cost
- Measure return on ad spend on revenue kept after returns and RTO, not on orders placed.
- Track the return rate by product and by campaign; a best-selling ad that drives a high-return product loses money.
- Better fit information in the ad lowers returns before they happen.
What to measure
- Contribution margin after returns, by product and by campaign.
- Cost per purchase and average order value by collection.
- New versus returning customers, and repeat purchase within 90 days.
- Feed health: products with no impressions are often a feed problem, not a demand problem.
How Monastic Media runs these accounts
One in-house team in Surat scripts, shoots and edits the ads videos and runs the Meta and Google campaigns they go into, so the people who see the numbers are the people who make the next ad. Seven KPIs (spend, revenue, ROAS, cost per purchase, CTR, CPC and purchases) go to the brand's Slack channel every evening at 6:30 PM. See how our performance marketing works

Questions
What is the best way to advertise a clothing brand in India?+
Run catalogue ads on Meta from a clean product feed, make short videos for the products that carry the season, capture searches with Google Shopping, and retarget with fit advice and customer photos.
How do fashion brands reduce returns from ads?+
Show the size the model wears and their height, add fit notes and a clear size chart, show the fabric up close, and track returns by campaign so ads that drive high-return products get fixed.
Should a fashion brand sell on its own site or on marketplaces?+
Most do both. Marketplaces bring buyers who are already shopping; the brand site keeps the margin and the customer data. Ads usually point to the brand site, and the marketplace listings benefit from the extra brand searches.
When should a fashion brand run sales?+
Around the end of season sales in January and in June to July, festive windows such as Diwali, and wedding season for occasion wear. Too many sales train buyers to wait.
