How Long Should Your Meta Ads Video Be? A D2C Guide for India

There is no single right length. Your ad's job decides it, the first three seconds decide whether anyone watches, and your Ads Manager data tells you when to cut.

The short answer

Most D2C ads on Meta do best somewhere between 15 and 45 seconds. That range hides the real rule: the job the ad has to do decides the length. A video that has to explain a new product to a stranger needs more time than one reminding a past visitor to come back and buy.

Founders often brief "a 30-second ad" because that is what TV taught us. On Reels, nobody watches because they were told to. They watch for as long as the video keeps earning it. So start with the job, then pick a length, then let the data cut it down.

What Meta's placements actually require

Meta lets you upload long videos, so the upper limit is rarely the problem. The minimums matter more. Most placements accept very short videos, but Meta's specs ask for at least 5 seconds on Facebook in-stream video. If your edit is under 5 seconds, it may not qualify for every placement, and Advantage+ placements will have less inventory to work with.

Length limits differ by placement and Meta changes them from time to time, so check the placement preview in Ads Manager before you lock an edit. In practice you will never want to run a direct response ad anywhere near the limits.

  • Shoot and edit vertical 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 first. That covers Reels and Stories, where most D2C spend in India goes.
  • Keep text and faces out of the top and bottom of the frame, where the Reels interface covers the video.
  • Make a 4:5 version for Facebook and Instagram feed if your feed spend is meaningful.
  • Burn in captions. Plenty of people scroll with the sound off on the metro, at work or late at night.

Why the job decides the length

Think about what the buyer needs to believe before they tap "Shop now". Every belief costs seconds. The more beliefs you need, the longer the ad.

Here is how that plays out for Indian D2C categories:

  • Everyday fashion and accessories: the product sells itself visually. A try-on, a fit check and the price point can land in 15 to 20 seconds. Add a few seconds if sizing worries are your biggest return reason.
  • Beauty and skincare: buyers want to see texture, application and some before-and-after context, plus ingredients for the label readers. 25 to 40 seconds is common.
  • Home and kitchen gadgets: the demo is the ad. If the product solves a problem in one shot, 20 seconds works. If it has three uses, show all three and run 35 to 45.
  • Health and wellness: trust takes longer. Creator stories, routine and how to use it often need 40 to 60 seconds, and claims must stay inside Meta's policies.
  • New brands selling to Tier 2 and Tier 3 buyers: a few extra seconds on COD, easy returns and real reviews can matter more than another product shot.

How to write a script to a length

A natural speaking pace in English or Hinglish is roughly two to three words a second. Use that to check a script before the shoot. If your 20-second script has 90 words, the creator will rush it or the edit will run long.

A simple structure for a 30-second performance ad:

  • For 15 seconds, drop the problem section and keep hook, demo, offer.
  • For 45 to 60 seconds, add one objection handled on camera and a second proof point.
  • Hindi lines often run longer than the English version of the same line, so time each language version separately.
  • Write one message per ad. Two messages is a reason for two ads, not a longer one. Our UGC ad script framework goes deeper.

Let your Ads Manager data pick the length

Your account will tell you the right length faster than any rule. Add these columns in Ads Manager and read them together:

  • 3-second video plays divided by impressions: your hook rate. If this is weak, length is not your problem yet. Fix the first three seconds.
  • Video play columns at the quarter, half, three-quarter and near-complete marks: these show where people leave. A steep drop at one point usually means a slow section you can cut.
  • ThruPlays and average play time: if most viewers leave well before the offer, the offer needs to come earlier or the ad needs to be shorter.
  • Cost per purchase and ROAS: the final judge. A longer ad with fewer completions can still win if the people who stay are ready to buy.

Brief one shoot, cut three lengths

The most efficient way to answer the length question is to stop guessing. Brief the shoot for the longest version and plan the cutdowns at the script stage, so every key moment exists as a clean clip.

From one shoot you can usually get:

  • A long version, 40 to 60 seconds, for cold audiences on products that need explaining.
  • A core version, 20 to 30 seconds, which often becomes the workhorse.
  • A short version, 6 to 15 seconds, for retargeting and sale periods.
  • Two or three different hooks on the core version, since the hook usually moves results more than length does.
  • Hindi, English or regional language versions where your buyers are.

Mistakes that make ads too long or too short

  • Opening with a logo, brand name or slow intro. The viewer has not decided to care yet.
  • Keeping a shot because it was expensive to film, not because it sells.
  • Cutting a demo product to 10 seconds so the viewer never understands what it does.
  • Putting the offer only in the last second, after most viewers have left.
  • Testing length and hook at the same time, so you cannot tell which change worked. Test one variable at a time, as in our creative testing framework.
  • Running one edit for months. When frequency climbs and click-through falls, refresh it. See signs of ad fatigue.

Questions

What is the best length for a Meta Reels ad in India?

For most D2C products, 15 to 30 seconds is a sensible start for Reels. Products that need a demo or more trust can go to 45 to 60 seconds if the hook and pacing hold attention.

What is the minimum video length for Meta ads?

Most placements accept very short videos, but Meta's specs ask for at least 5 seconds on Facebook in-stream video. Keep edits at 5 seconds or more if you want them to qualify for all placements.

Should retargeting ads be shorter than prospecting ads?

Usually yes. People in retargeting already know the product, so 6 to 15 seconds with one clear reason to come back, like reviews, an offer or COD, tends to be enough.

Do longer videos cost more on Meta?

You pay for delivery, not for the seconds of video. Length affects cost indirectly: if people drop off before the offer, you get fewer clicks and purchases for the same spend.

How do I know if my ad video is too long?

Check the video play columns in Ads Manager that show how far people watched. A sharp drop at one point shows a section to cut, and if most viewers leave before the offer, move it earlier.
