Meta Ads Account Disabled or Restricted? A Recovery Guide for Indian D2C Brands

What to check in the first hour, how Indian brands usually get flagged, how to write the appeal, and what to do if Meta says no.

First, find out what was actually restricted

A message saying your ads are off can mean four different things. Each one is fixed in a different way, so start by finding out which one you have. Open Account Quality in Meta Business settings. It lists every restricted asset, the reason Meta gives and whether you can ask for a review.

The fix and the person who can fix it depend on the row below. Only an admin can ask for a review, so make sure the right person is logged in.

What is restrictedWhat it meansWhere to start
One ad or ad set rejectedThat ad broke a policy. The account is fine.Edit or delete the ad, or ask for a review of that ad
Ad account disabledNo ads can run from this accountThe reason in Account Quality: payment, policy or suspicious activity
Business portfolio restrictedEvery ad account inside it is stuckBusiness verification, admin security, policy history
Personal profile restricted from advertisingYou cannot run ads on any accountIdentity check on your own profile, then add a backup admin

The first hour: what not to do

Panic leads to most second strikes. A temporary restriction can turn permanent because of what the founder does next.

  • Do not open a new ad account or Business portfolio to get around the block. Meta treats that as evading enforcement, and it can lead to every linked profile being disabled.
  • Do not send the same appeal again and again. Reviews are limited. A second request with nothing new in it gets you nothing.
  • Do not log in from new devices, new cities or a VPN while the review is open. Unusual logins are a common reason for restrictions in the first place.
  • Do not hand over your password to anyone who says they can unblock accounts. Meta reviews have no paid shortcut, and these offers often end with the account stolen.
  • Do take screenshots of the notice, the reason given and the ads involved. You will need them for the appeal.

Why Indian D2C accounts usually get flagged

Meta rarely explains a ban in detail, but the same causes come up again and again for brands selling in India.

  • Health and body claims. Copy like "cures hair fall", "lose weight in 7 days" or "permanent fairness" breaks Meta's rules, and some of these claims are also restricted under Indian law on drug and remedy advertising. Ayurveda, supplements and skincare brands get hit most.
  • Before and after images and close crops of bodies or skin problems.
  • Personal attributes. "Are you suffering from acne?" or "Tired of being overweight?" suggests you know something personal about the viewer, and Meta does not allow it.
  • Payment failures. A declined card, a card mandate that the bank stopped, or a balance left unpaid can disable the account until it is cleared.
  • Landing page problems. An online store with no contact details, refund policy or real address, prices that do not match the ad, or a domain that was set up the day before.
  • Hacked or careless access. Freelancers who left long ago still listed as admins, no two-factor login, or a profile taken over through a phishing "Meta Support" message.
  • Prohibited or restricted products. Weapons-like products, adult items, some supplements and anything that looks like a scheme to get rich.

Fixing a payment restriction

Payment restrictions are the easiest to fix, and most Indian brands meet one at some point. Card payments for ads in India run on bank mandates under RBI rules, and banks often decline larger or automatic charges unless you approve them each time. Then Meta cannot collect, and the account stops.

Open Billing and payments, pay the outstanding balance in full, then add a payment method that will keep working. Many Indian advertisers switch to prepaid funds through UPI or net banking, so the account spends money already added instead of charging a card. Check that your GST details and business name in billing match your registration. Once the balance is cleared, payment restrictions usually lift without an appeal. If they do not, ask for a review from Account Quality and attach the payment receipt.

Appealing a policy restriction, step by step

Fix the problem before you appeal. Reviewers check the account as it stands now, not your explanation.

  • Read the exact policy Meta named in Account Quality. Your appeal has to answer that policy, not ads in general.
  • Remove or edit every ad that could have triggered it, including old paused ads with the same claim.
  • Clean up the landing page: a real address, phone number, email, refund and shipping policy, and product claims that match the ad.
  • Ask for the review from Account Quality, selecting the affected asset and choosing Request review.
  • Write two or three short, factual lines: what your business sells, what you changed, and that the account is used only by your verified team. No anger, no threats, no long story.
  • Attach proof if asked: GST certificate, certificate of incorporation or Udyam registration, and a utility bill or bank statement showing the business address. Use the exact legal name everywhere.
  • Wait. Some reviews come back in a day or two, while others take a couple of weeks. Do not file a second request unless you have something new to add.

When the problem is your profile or Business portfolio

If your personal profile is restricted, every ad account you manage stops, even clean ones. Complete any identity check Meta asks for on the profile, using a government ID with the same name as the profile. Turn on two-factor login, sign out of sessions you do not recognise, and remove admins and partners you no longer work with.

For the Business portfolio, finish business verification in Security Centre with documents in the registered legal name, and verify your website domain so Meta knows the store belongs to you. Keep at least two trusted admins with two-factor login, so one locked profile never stops your ads again.

If the appeal is rejected

A rejected review on an ad account is usually final. Meta's rules say disabled assets cannot be brought back after a long period, and appeals have to be filed within 180 days. Running ads through a newly opened account to get around the decision breaks Meta's rules and puts the rest of your setup at risk.

What you can protect is the business. Your pixel and Conversions API data, product catalogue, audiences and creatives are not lost if your Business portfolio is still in good standing and has other ad accounts. Meanwhile, move budget to Google Search and Shopping, which pick up buyers already looking for your product. Our guide on Meta Ads vs Google Ads for D2C brands explains what each one does well. Marketplaces also keep orders coming in while Meta is down.

Preventing the next one

  • Two or more admins on the Business portfolio, all with two-factor login, and partner access instead of shared passwords for agencies and freelancers.
  • Business and domain verification done before you need it.
  • A claims check before every new ad goes live: no cures, no guaranteed results, no "you" plus a body problem.
  • Server-side tracking set up properly, so Meta sees clean purchase data. See our Meta CAPI tracking setup guide.
  • Raise spend on a new account step by step. A sudden jump on an account with no history looks suspicious. Our guide on why ROAS drops when scaling ad spend covers how to pace it.
  • Prepaid funds or a backup payment method, so one declined card does not stop the account.

Questions

How long does Meta take to review a disabled ad account in India?

There is no fixed time. Some reviews come back within a day or two, while others take a couple of weeks, and sending more requests does not make it faster.

Can I just create a new ad account if mine is disabled?

No. Opening new accounts to get around a restriction counts as evading enforcement and can get your profile and Business portfolio disabled as well.

What documents does Meta accept for business verification in India?

Common ones are the GST certificate, certificate of incorporation, Udyam registration, and a utility bill or bank statement with the business address. The legal name must match exactly across all of them.

My account was disabled for a failed payment. Do I need to appeal?

Usually not. Pay the outstanding balance in Billing and payments, add a working method such as prepaid funds via UPI, and the restriction normally lifts on its own.

Is there a deadline to appeal a disabled Meta ad account?

Yes. Appeals must be filed within 180 days, and accounts disabled for longer than that cannot be brought back.

Someone is offering to unblock my account for a fee. Should I trust them?

No. Meta reviews have no paid shortcut, and these offers often end with the scammer taking over your profile or Business portfolio.
