Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns: A D2C Guide for India
When to make Advantage+ your main Meta campaign, when to keep it on the side, and the India-specific traps that make its numbers look better than they are.
What Advantage+ shopping campaigns are in 2026
Advantage+ shopping campaigns (ASC) were Meta's automated campaign type for ecommerce. In 2025 Meta renamed them Advantage+ sales campaigns and moved them inside the normal Sales objective. In early 2026 Meta merged the manual and Advantage+ setup into one flow, so every new sales campaign now starts with the automation switched on.
A sales campaign keeps its Advantage+ status only while three things stay automated: Advantage+ budget (the budget sits at campaign level), Advantage+ audience (Meta finds the buyers, and your audiences are only suggestions) and Advantage+ placements. Switch any of them off and you are running a manual campaign again.
Two other changes matter for Indian accounts. Ad sets are back, and each one can hold up to 50 ads. The old existing customer budget cap has gone, so you can no longer tell the campaign to spend only a fixed share on people who already bought. Meta changes this screen often, so check what your own Ads Manager shows before you build.
What you control and what Meta controls
Most founders want to know which levers still exist. Here is how it splits now.
- Because Meta picks the audience, the creative is your targeting. A campaign full of similar ads will find similar people.
- Because Meta optimises to the event you send, your purchase data decides what it learns. Bad data trains it the wrong way.
| You still control | Meta decides |
|---|---|
| The creative: which videos, images and catalogue ads go in | Who sees each ad, across new, engaged and existing buyers |
| The offer, landing page and product feed | Which placement each ad runs in |
| Total campaign budget and any cost or ROAS target | How budget moves between ad sets and ads |
| Audience suggestions and country or age limits | How far past your suggestions it goes |
| Conversion event and the value you send back | Which ads get spend and which get starved |
Core engine or supplementary? Decide by your situation
There is no single answer. It depends on your data, your creative supply and how much you need to see. Use this as a starting point.
| Your situation | How to use Advantage+ |
|---|---|
| Clean purchase tracking (pixel plus CAPI), steady orders every day, a catalogue in good shape | Make it the main prospecting campaign and keep a small manual campaign for tests |
| New brand, few purchases a week | Keep it supplementary. Run manual campaigns first so you learn which angles sell |
| Many COD orders and high returns to origin (RTO) | Keep it supplementary until you fix what counts as a purchase |
| Fewer than about ten distinct ads ready | Supplementary. It will push spend into one or two ads and they will tire fast |
| Mostly repeat buyers already (consumables, refills) | Use it, but watch how much spend goes to existing customers |
| You need to test one hook or one offer cleanly | Use a manual ad set or ABO, not Advantage+ |
The India traps that flatter its numbers
Advantage+ often reports a better ROAS than manual campaigns in Indian accounts. Some of that is real. Some of it comes from habits of the Indian market.
- COD orders counted as purchases. If your Purchase event fires when a COD order is placed, Meta learns from orders that may be cancelled at confirmation or refused at the door. Advantage+ then looks for more people like them. Send purchase value from the server through Meta CAPI, and compare delivered orders by campaign in your store's order data, not only Ads Manager purchases.
- Spend drifting to existing customers. Without the budget cap, the campaign can spend heavily on people who would have bought anyway, such as your Instagram followers and past buyers. Define Existing Customers and Engaged Audience in ad account settings, then break results down by audience segment every week.
- Festive and sale spikes. During Diwali, end-of-season sales and big marketplace sale days, conversion rates rise everywhere. Advantage+ scales into that demand and the reported results look strong. Judge it on normal weeks too.
- Catalogue mismatches. Out-of-stock sizes, wrong prices or old images in your store's catalogue sync get shown to buyers. Fix the feed before blaming the campaign.
How to set one up properly
- Fix tracking first. Pixel and CAPI both sending Purchase with value, deduplicated, with a good event match quality score in Events Manager.
- Define audience segments. Existing customers from your store's customer list and purchasers, engaged audience from site visitors and Instagram engagers. These power the reporting.
- Feed it variety, not volume of the same ad. Mix UGC-style performance ads videos, static images, carousels and catalogue ads. Different hooks, different buyers, different problems.
- Start with one campaign. Splitting the same budget across several Advantage+ campaigns makes each one learn slower.
- Leave it alone during learning. Big budget jumps, new targets or swapping out most ads resets learning. See why edits reset the learning phase.
- Add new ads in batches. Bring in fresh creative every week or two instead of editing live ads one by one.
- Raise budget in steps. Large overnight increases usually push cost per purchase up. Our guide on why ROAS drops when scaling explains why.
How to read the results honestly
Ads Manager tells you what Meta credits to itself. Before you call Advantage+ your main campaign, check these other views.
- New versus existing. Use the audience segment breakdown. A high ROAS built mostly on existing customers is retention, not acquisition.
- Store orders against Meta. Compare delivered, prepaid and confirmed COD orders in your store backend with what Ads Manager reports for the same week.
- Blended numbers. When Advantage+ spend goes up, total store revenue and new customer count should go up too. If only Meta's reported ROAS rises, it is taking credit for sales that would have happened anyway.
- Creative spread. Look at spend by ad. If one ad takes almost all of it, the campaign is only as healthy as that ad's freshness. Rising frequency with falling CTR means it is time to refresh.
When to pull back to manual
Move budget back to manual campaigns when cost per purchase climbs for more than a week while frequency rises, when segment reports show spend sliding towards existing customers, or when delivered orders in your store backend stop following Meta's reported purchases. Also go manual when you need a clean answer to one question, like which of two offers works better.
Most healthy Indian D2C accounts end up with both. Advantage+ carries broad prospecting once data and creative are ready. Manual campaigns handle testing, launches and specific audiences. Bad ads still lose money on autopilot, so the creative pipeline matters more than the campaign type. Our creative testing framework shows how to keep it fed.

Questions
Is Advantage+ shopping campaign the same as Advantage+ sales campaign?+
Yes. Meta renamed Advantage+ shopping campaigns to Advantage+ sales campaigns in 2025. They now sit inside the regular Sales objective, and a campaign keeps Advantage+ status only while budget, audience and placements are all automated.
Should a new D2C brand in India start with Advantage+?+
Usually not as the only campaign. With few purchases a week, the system has little to learn from, so run manual campaigns to find winning angles first, then move those ads into Advantage+.
Can I still limit spend on existing customers?+
The old existing customer budget cap has been removed. You can still define existing customers and engaged audience in ad account settings and see spend by segment, then adjust creative and budget based on what you see.
Does Advantage+ work for COD-heavy brands?+
It can, but only if your purchase signal is clean. If every COD order counts as a purchase when it is placed, the campaign learns from orders that may be cancelled or returned, so judge it on delivered orders in your store backend.
How many ads should go into an Advantage+ campaign?+
Enough distinct ads that Meta has real choices, a mix of videos, statics and catalogue ads with different hooks. Each ad set can hold up to 50 ads, but variety matters more than count.
