Click-to-WhatsApp Ads vs Website Conversion Ads on Meta: India D2C Guide

A WhatsApp chat is not a sale. Here is when a chat-first funnel beats the classic website checkout for Indian D2C brands, and how to test it properly.

How each one works

A Click-to-WhatsApp ad runs on Facebook and Instagram like any other ad. The button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business number, and a message you wrote in advance is already typed in. The shopper taps send, and from then on the sale happens in the chat: questions, sizes, a catalogue, a payment link or a COD confirmation.

A website conversion ad sends the shopper to a product or collection page on your store. The Meta pixel and the Conversions API report add to cart, checkout and purchase back to Meta, and the campaign learns who buys.

The difference that matters most is what Meta optimises for. A website campaign can optimise for purchases from day one because the store reports them. A WhatsApp campaign optimises for conversations by default, because Meta cannot see what happens in the chat unless you send it back. Optimise for chats and Meta finds people who like to chat. They are not always people who buy.

When Click-to-WhatsApp ads win

  • The buyer has questions before paying. Jewellery, made-to-order ethnic wear, furniture, gifting, supplements with a dosage question. A quick human answer does what a product page cannot.
  • COD is a big share of orders. Confirming the address and the order in chat before dispatch filters out fake and impulse COD orders, which cuts returns to origin.
  • Sizing or customisation decides the sale. Shoppers can send a photo, ask about fit or request a name engraving.
  • Your website is weak or new. A slow, thin store loses cold traffic. A chat can sell while the store is still being fixed.
  • Shoppers in smaller cities who trust a conversation more than a checkout page. Many prefer to talk to someone before paying a brand they have never heard of.

When website conversion ads win

  • Low order values and impulse products. If the product sells in a few seconds, a chat adds a step and someone has to staff it.
  • Large catalogues. Hundreds of products sell better through dynamic product ads and a fast collection page than through chat.
  • A store that already converts. If your checkout, prepaid offers and product pages work, purchase data keeps teaching Meta, and you scale with budget rather than headcount.
  • You want to scale fast. A website campaign doubles its orders without doubling your team. A chat funnel needs more replies, more people or better bots at every step up.

Track WhatsApp sales or don't run it

Most chat-first tests fail on measurement, not on the ads. Orders closed in WhatsApp often never reach your store backend with a source, so Ads Manager shows cheap conversations while the sales sit in a chat history no one counts.

Fix this before you spend:

  • Send chat purchases back to Meta. The Conversions API for business messaging lets your WhatsApp tool report purchase events from the chat. Then Meta can optimise for buyers, not chatters. Setting it up is close to website CAPI setup.
  • Create every chat order in your store. Use draft orders or payment links from your store backend so orders, stock and dispatch stay in one place.
  • Tag the source. A WhatsApp-only coupon code or an order tag lets you count chat orders separately in your store reports.
  • Compare on paid, delivered orders. Cost per conversation is not your number. Neither is cost per purchase in Ads Manager, if it does not match the store. See why Meta purchases and store orders differ.

The operations behind a chat funnel

A Click-to-WhatsApp ad hands your team a hot lead. What happens in the next few minutes decides the sale.

When someone messages you from one of these ads, WhatsApp opens a 72-hour free entry point window, so your replies and follow-ups in that window carry no message charges. After it closes, marketing messages are charged per message under WhatsApp's current pricing. Plan your follow-ups to fit inside the window.

  • Reply in minutes, not hours. Put an automated first reply in place with the catalogue and the top three answers.
  • Cover evenings. Many Indian shoppers scroll and chat after dinner, often when a team has logged off.
  • Write the pre-filled message so it starts the sale, for example asking about the product in the ad, not just "Hi".
  • Keep a short script for size, delivery time, COD and returns, so every agent answers the same way.
  • Send the payment link inside the chat, and push prepaid with a small, clear reason.

Creative is different for each

A website ad has to sell the click: product, proof, offer, then the page finishes the job. A WhatsApp ad has to start a conversation, so it works better when it invites a question. "Not sure of your size? Send us a message" or "Ask us to show you this on a call" gets better chats than a hard discount.

The basics stay the same. A hook in the first three seconds, vertical 9:16 video for reels, captions, and one message per ad. Showing a real person who replies on WhatsApp makes the chat feel safe to start.

How to run a fair test

Many brands end up running both: website conversion ads for the core catalogue and impulse products, and Click-to-WhatsApp ads for high-ticket products, custom orders and shoppers who need reassurance.

  • Run two separate campaigns, one to the website and one to WhatsApp, with the same creative, audience and product.
  • Give each enough budget and time to leave the learning phase, and do not edit mid-test. Edits reset learning, as explained in this guide to learning phase resets.
  • Judge both on the same thing: cost per paid, delivered order, after returns to origin.
  • Add in the cost of people and tools for the chat funnel before you call a winner.
  • Look at repeat buyers too. A chat often leaves you a WhatsApp contact you can sell to again, a value a website order with no opt-in does not give you.

Questions

Are Click-to-WhatsApp ads cheaper than website conversion ads in India?

A conversation usually costs less than a purchase, but that is not a fair comparison. Compare cost per paid, delivered order, including the time your team spends replying.

Can Meta optimise Click-to-WhatsApp ads for purchases?

Yes, if your WhatsApp Business API tool sends purchase events back through the Conversions API for business messaging. Without that, Meta can only optimise for conversations started.

Do I need the WhatsApp Business API, or is the WhatsApp Business app enough?

The app works for small volumes, but you cannot automate replies at scale, add several agents or send purchase events back to Meta. Once ads bring steady chat volume, move to the API.

Are WhatsApp messages from ad chats free?

When a shopper messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad, a 72-hour free entry point window opens and messages in that window are free. Marketing messages sent after it closes are charged per message.

Do Click-to-WhatsApp ads reduce COD returns?

They can, because you confirm the address and the order in chat before dispatch, and you can offer a reason to pay prepaid. Check this against your own return to origin data, not the ad report.
