Google Ads Conversion Tracking Setup for D2C Stores in India
How to get every real store order into Google Ads exactly once, with the right value, before you spend on Search, Shopping or Performance Max.
What good tracking means before you launch
Google Ads bidding learns only from the conversions you send it. If purchases go missing, get counted twice or carry the wrong value, Smart Bidding and Performance Max go after the wrong people. Tracking also decides what your dashboard says ROAS is, so fix it before you add budget.
For a D2C store, good tracking means four things.
- Every order is recorded once. Not zero times, not twice.
- The value is right. In INR, with one clear rule on whether shipping and tax are included.
- Only one purchase action is primary. Add to cart and begin checkout can be recorded, but they should not drive bidding.
- Enhanced conversions are on. Hashed email and phone from checkout help Google match orders that cookies miss.
Three ways to set it up
Most pages that rank for this topic show one method. In practice you pick from three, and the right one depends on your checkout and your team.
| Method | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your store platform's Google & YouTube sales channel app | Connects the store to Google Ads and Merchant Center, creates the conversion actions and fires them through the platform's customer events | Most stores on the platform's native checkout | Old manual tags left in the theme cause double counting |
| Google Tag Manager in a custom pixel | You add your own Google Ads tag through the customer events or custom pixel section and push checkout events yourself | Teams that need custom values, extra events or more control | Needs someone who can test it after every theme or app change |
| Server-side tracking or a tracking app | Orders are sent from the server or the app straight to Google Ads, along with hashed customer data | Stores on third-party checkouts, heavy COD stores, high-spend accounts | More moving parts. Make sure only one source sends the purchase |
Step by step with the Google & YouTube app
This is the right starting point for most D2C stores on their platform's own checkout.
- Remove old tracking first. Look for any Google Ads tag pasted into the theme files and any old code on the thank you or order status page. Purchase tracking now belongs in customer events, and old pasted scripts either double count or have quietly stopped working.
- Install the Google & YouTube app from your store platform's app store and sign in with the Google account that has admin access to both your Google Ads account and Merchant Center.
- Link the Google Ads account and the Merchant Center account. Shopping and Performance Max need the product feed, so fix disapprovals before launch (our Merchant Center fix guide).
- Turn on conversion tracking and enhanced conversions inside the app. The app creates its own conversion actions in Google Ads for purchase, add to cart, begin checkout and page or product views.
- In Google Ads, go to Goals > Conversions > Summary. Keep the app's purchase action as primary. Set add to cart, begin checkout and views to secondary, and set any older purchase action left over from a past setup to secondary or remove it.
- Check that the account currency is INR and that the purchase action counts every conversion, with a click-through window that fits how long your buyers usually take to decide.
The Indian checkout problem: third-party checkouts and COD
This is where Indian stores lose the most data, and guides written for US stores skip it.
Many Indian brands use a one-click or COD checkout from a third-party provider instead of the platform's own checkout. When the order is placed inside that provider's flow, the platform's checkout events may never fire in the browser, so the Google & YouTube app does not see the purchase. Some providers send the purchase to Google Ads themselves. Others need you to turn on their integration and enter your conversion ID and label.
Pick one source for the purchase event and switch the other off. If both the app and the checkout provider send a purchase, you count every order twice. Pass the store's order ID as the transaction ID on every purchase. If the same order is sent twice anyway, Google can then drop the copy.
- Prepaid and COD together: both are orders, so both should count as purchases. Just know that some COD orders will be refused at the door.
- High RTO categories: record the purchase as normal, then retract cancelled or returned orders by uploading conversion adjustments from your order data. Bidding then learns from orders that were delivered.
- Partial COD or advance payment flows: make sure the purchase fires once, when the order is confirmed, and not again when the balance is paid.
- If COD returns are hurting your margins, see our COD return rate guide. The thinking carries over to Google.
Settings inside Google Ads that stores get wrong
| Setting | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purchase actions | Exactly one | Two primary actions double the purchases bidding sees |
| GA4 imported purchase | Secondary, if you import it at all | Use it for reporting. The native Google Ads tag should drive bidding |
| Conversion value | Order value in INR, one rule for shipping and tax | ROAS targets mean nothing if the value is not consistent |
| Count | Every | Each order is a sale. Use "one" only for lead actions |
| Enhanced conversions | On, using data from the Google tag or app | Recovers orders that browser cookies miss |
| Consent mode | Set it up if you sell to the EU or UK, and check India's data protection rules | Without it, tags may be blocked or not compliant for those visitors |
How to test it before you spend
Do not wait for a campaign to tell you tracking is broken. Test it on a live order.
- Open the store with Google Tag Assistant connected and check that the Google tag loads on product, cart and checkout pages.
- Place one real prepaid order and one COD order. If you use a third-party checkout, place them through it.
- In Google Ads, open the purchase action and check its status and the tag diagnostics. New conversions can take a few hours to show.
- Match the test order IDs and values against your store's order list. Each order should appear once with the right value.
- Check enhanced conversions diagnostics a few days later. It should show that customer data is being received.
- After any theme change, checkout app install or new tracking app, repeat the test.
Common faults and fixes
For Meta, the same order-level checks apply. See Meta CAPI setup for India and why ad platforms and store orders disagree.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Google shows about twice as many purchases as your store | App plus an old manual tag, or two primary purchase actions | Remove the old tag and keep one primary action |
| Google shows far fewer purchases than your store | Third-party checkout not sending the purchase, or ad blockers and cookie loss | Turn on the checkout provider's Google Ads integration and turn on enhanced conversions |
| Values look wrong or inflated | Values sent without currency, or with shipping and tax in some orders and not others | Send INR and use one rule for every order |
| Conversion action shows no recent conversions | Tag removed in a theme update or app disconnected | Reconnect the app and repeat the test order |
| ROAS in Google far above real profit | High COD refusals counted as sales | Upload retractions for cancelled and returned orders |

Questions
Does the Google & YouTube app track purchases in Google Ads automatically?+
Yes, on your store platform's native checkout it creates purchase and other conversion actions and fires them through customer events. On a third-party checkout it may not see the purchase, so test with a real order.
Should I use GA4 conversions or the Google Ads tag for bidding?+
Use the native Google Ads purchase action as primary for bidding. Keep the GA4 imported purchase as secondary so the same order is not counted twice.
Do COD orders count as conversions in Google Ads?+
They count when the order is placed, the same as prepaid orders. If many COD orders get refused, upload retractions for the cancelled ones so bidding learns from orders that were delivered.
Why does Google Ads show more purchases than my store?+
Usually an old manual tag is still running next to the app, or two purchase actions are set as primary. Remove the extra tag and keep one primary purchase action.
Is enhanced conversions worth turning on for an Indian store?+
Yes. It sends hashed email and phone from checkout so Google can match orders that cookies miss, and in the Google & YouTube app it is a setting rather than a code project.
