Google Shopping Feed Optimization for D2C Brands in India

Shopping ads have no keywords. Google reads your feed to decide which searches your products show for, so the feed is where impressions are won or lost.

Why the feed is your targeting on Google Shopping

In a Search campaign you choose keywords. In Shopping and Performance Max you do not. Google matches a search like "cotton kurta set for women" to products by reading your product data. It reads the title first, then the description, product type, colour, size, material and the rest.

So a product titled "Aarohi Set" can be approved and live and still get almost no impressions. Nothing is broken. Google just cannot tell what it is. Feed optimisation means describing each product the way your buyers search for it.

This guide is about winning impressions once products are approved. If products are being rejected, start with our Merchant Center disapproval fix. If you are still deciding between campaign types, read Search Ads vs Shopping Ads.

Titles: write them for the search, not the catalogue

The title can run to 150 characters, but Google cuts it short on most placements, especially on mobile. Put the words people search for at the start. Your internal collection name, if you keep it at all, goes at the end.

Use the words Indian buyers actually type. That means "saree" not "sari", "kurta set" not "ethnic co-ord", "anti tarnish" and "gold plated" for jewellery, and "pack of 2" for consumables. Your search terms report is the best source for this. Take the phrases that already convert and add them to the titles of products that do not show for them yet.

  • Keep one product, one title. Each size or colour variant should name its own colour and size so it can match a specific search.
  • Keep promotional words like "best price", "sale" or "free shipping" out of the title. Google can reject them, and they use up the characters people actually see.
  • Only claim what the landing page says. If the title says "pure cotton", the product page has to say it too.

Images: the click is won here

On a Shopping results page every ad shows a picture, a title and a price, and the picture does most of the selling. Google has raised the minimum image size to 500 x 500 pixels for all categories. Warnings started in April 2026 and enforcement begins on 31 January 2027, so fix small images now rather than lose products later.

The minimum is not the target. Upload large, sharp, square images so they look good on every screen.

  • Main image (image_link): the product alone on a plain white or light background, filling most of the frame. No text, logos, badges, borders or watermarks.
  • Additional images (additional_image_link): put lifestyle shots, the product worn or in use, close-ups of fabric or finish and a size reference here.
  • Apparel: for the same product, test a flat lay against a worn, on-body shot as the main image. Keep whichever earns more clicks in your account.
  • Match the variant: the red kurta's feed row must show the red kurta, not the hero colour of the collection.

The attributes that actually move impressions

Most stores send only the basics. The products that win send more detail, because every extra attribute gives Google one more thing to match against a search or a filter.

AttributeWhat to sendWhy it matters
brandYour brand name on every productBrand searches and branded filters depend on it
gtinYour GS1 barcode if your products have oneHelps Google place the product in the right listings. In India identifier_exists is recommended, not required, so if you have no barcode, send brand and leave GTIN empty
product_typeYour own path, e.g. Women > Kurta Sets > CottonAdds search context and lets you split campaigns by category
color, size, material, pattern, gender, age_groupPlain words buyers usePowers filters and variant matching, essential for fashion
item_group_idOne shared ID across all variants of a productGroups sizes and colours correctly instead of treating them as separate products
product_highlightShort benefit lines, e.g. "Breathable cotton for summer"Gives Google more relevant words to match on and can appear on the listing
video_linkA link to the product videoNew optional attribute in 2026. Use the same product videos you already make for ads

Price, availability and shipping must match the site

Google crawls your product pages and compares them with the feed. Say the feed shows in stock but the page shows sold out, or the sale price on the page is different from sale_price in the feed. The product then gets limited or pulled, and you lose impressions even with perfect titles.

Two habits prevent most of this. First, sync the feed at least daily, and more often during sales. Second, during a festive sale, update sale prices in the store first and let them flow to the feed. Do not edit them in Merchant Center by hand. The Diwali sale checklist covers the timing for the Meta side of the same sale.

Custom labels: tell Google which products deserve the budget

You get five custom labels, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4. Shoppers never see them. They let you group products in campaigns and asset groups by things Google cannot learn from your site.

  • Margin band: high, medium, low. Push spend toward products that make money after shipping and returns, not just products with high ROAS.
  • Bestseller status: hero, steady, new. New products often need their own campaign, or they never get impressions next to proven winners.
  • Season: summer, wedding, winter, festive. Switch groups on and off without touching the catalogue.
  • Return or RTO risk: flag products with high return rates so you can hold back spend on them.
  • Price band: entry, mid, premium, to see which bands Google rewards in your category.

How to edit the feed without breaking your store

Most store platforms send your store product title straight into the feed. If you rewrite store titles for Google, your product pages can end up reading badly. There is a cleaner way.

Create a supplemental feed in Google Sheets and connect it in Merchant Center. Each row holds the product id exactly as Merchant Center shows it, plus only the columns you want to override, such as title, product_type, product_highlight and custom labels. Merchant Center applies these on top of your main feed, and your store stays as it is.

Some changes follow a pattern, like adding the brand name in front of every title or filling material from a product tag. For those, use attribute rules inside Merchant Center instead of editing rows one by one.

A weekly feed routine that keeps impressions growing

Feed work and campaign setup go together. If you run Performance Max, read should you use Performance Max. If you are splitting budget across platforms, Meta Ads vs Google Ads for D2C explains where each one fits.

  • Check Merchant Center diagnostics for new warnings, especially image size and price mismatch.
  • Pull the search terms report from Shopping or the search insights from Performance Max. Add converting phrases to the titles of related products.
  • Find products with impressions but almost no clicks. Usually the main image or the start of the title is the problem. Change one thing at a time.
  • Find products with no impressions at all. Usually the title is vague or key attributes are missing.
  • Refresh custom labels as bestsellers and margins change.
  • Confirm sale prices and stock before every sale goes live.

Questions

What is Google Shopping feed optimization?

It means improving the product data you send to Merchant Center, mainly titles, images and attributes. Google then matches your products to more relevant searches and more people click them. Shopping has no keywords, so the feed does the targeting.

Do Indian D2C brands need GTINs for Google Shopping?

Not always. In India identifier_exists is recommended rather than required. If your products carry a GS1 barcode, send it. If they do not, send your brand name and leave GTIN empty.

Can I change Google Shopping titles without changing my store's product titles?

Yes. Use a supplemental feed in Google Sheets keyed by the Merchant Center product id, or use attribute rules in Merchant Center. Both override the feed without touching your store.

What image size does Google Shopping need in 2026?

The minimum is now 500 x 500 pixels for all categories. Warnings have run since April 2026 and enforcement starts on 31 January 2027. For the main image, use larger, sharp, square images on a plain background.

My products are approved but get no impressions. Why?

Usually the title does not use the words people search, key attributes are missing, or bestsellers in the same campaign take all the budget. Fix the title and attributes first. Then use a custom label to give new products their own group.
