UGC Ads in India: How Brands Get Creator Ads That Sell

Finding creators is easy. Getting creator videos that sell is harder. This covers sourcing, briefs, rights, disclosure and testing on Meta.

What a UGC ad is, and what it is not

A UGC ad is a video made to look like a real person talking about a product. It is shot on a phone, usually in a home, a bathroom or a car. It works on Meta because it looks like the reels people already watch, so they are less likely to scroll past it.

It is not the same as influencer marketing. An influencer post is bought for the creator's audience. A UGC ad is bought for the video itself, which the brand then runs as a paid ad to the audience it picks. The creator's follower count hardly matters. What matters is whether they can hold attention on camera and sound believable.

Most UGC content that brands collect never turns into a working ad. It comes back as a pleasant review with no hook, no clear problem and no offer. The rest of this guide is about avoiding that.

Four ways Indian brands get creator ads

Every route works for some brands. The difference is who writes the script, who checks the footage, and whether anyone links the videos to ad results.

Choosing creators who sell, not just creators who look good

The best UGC creator for an ad is someone your buyer would trust. A skincare brand for women in their thirties should not cast only college students. A pressure cooker brand does better with someone who looks like they cook every day.

  • Watch their talking videos, not their photos. You want someone who gets to the point in the first three seconds.
  • Check their language. Hinglish, Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati or English each reach different buyers. Pick the language your buyers scroll in, and test regional versions.
  • Cast a mix. Different ages, cities and looks let the ad account find which face sells to which audience.
  • Look for real use. A creator who actually uses the product shows it with confidence, and that shows on camera.
  • Skip the big names for ads. Creators with small followings are often better on camera for ads, and quicker to work with.

The brief decides whether the video sells

A vague brief like "make a fun review of our serum" gets you a fun review that does not sell. A brief for an ad tells the creator what the viewer should feel in each part of the video.

  • Three hook options for the first line, so you can cut several versions from one shoot.
  • The problem in the buyer's own words, taken from reviews, comments and customer support chats.
  • The demo: what to show close up, in which order, in what light.
  • Proof: a before and after, a texture shot, a pack opening, a fit check.
  • One offer and one call to action. Not three.
  • Must-say and must-not-say lines, including any claim your category is not allowed to make.
  • Technical specs: vertical 9:16, natural sound, clean audio, extra B-roll, no music burned in, so the editor can add captions and trends later.

Usage rights, disclosure and partnership ads

This is where most DIY creator deals go wrong. Write it down before anyone shoots.

Usage rights. Agree in writing where the video can run (Meta, Google, YouTube, your website, marketplace listings), for how long, and whether you can edit and re-cut it. A creator who agreed to an Instagram post has not automatically agreed to you running their face in paid ads for a year.

Disclosure. Under ASCI guidelines in India, a creator who is paid, gifted the product or otherwise connected to the brand must disclose it clearly and upfront, with a label such as #ad or #collab that people can see without clicking "more". Claims in the video still have to be true and backed up by the brand, whoever says them.

Partnership ads. On Meta, partnership ads run from the creator's handle and your page together, with the creator's permission given inside Instagram or Facebook. They show the creator's name on the ad, which often makes the video feel more like a recommendation. Get the creator to grant this access in the same agreement as the usage rights, so you are not chasing them after a video starts working.

How to test UGC ads on Meta without wasting spend

On Meta the ad is the targeting. Each new video teaches the system who to show it to, so you need several real variations, not one video with a different first frame.

Treat one creator shoot as raw material. A good editor cuts it into several ads: different hooks, different openings, a shorter version for stories, a version with the offer first. Then let the account decide.

  • Test hooks first. If people do not stop scrolling, nothing after the hook matters. Hook rate and CTR tell you this early.
  • Then judge on purchases. A video with a great CTR and no sales is a good hook on the wrong message. Cost per purchase and ROAS decide what you keep.
  • Refresh before fatigue. Rising frequency with falling CTR is the signal to bring in a new creator or a new hook.
  • Re-shoot winners. When a script works, have two or three other creators shoot the same script. The script won, not only the face.
  • Feed what you learn back into the brief. The best UGC teams change the next brief based on last week's numbers.

Questions to ask a UGC ads agency in India

Most agency pages show a reel of nice-looking videos. Nice is not the test. Ask these instead.

  • Who writes the scripts, and do they read the ad account data before writing?
  • Do you shoot and edit in-house, or send briefs to freelancers you have never met?
  • How many cut-down variations do I get from each creator video?
  • Do contracts include paid usage rights and partnership ad access, and for how long?
  • Who checks claims and ASCI disclosure before a video goes live?
  • After delivery, who watches which videos sell and decides the next batch?
  • Can you show me how creative results are reported, for example daily ROAS, CTR and cost per purchase by ad?

Where UGC fits with the rest of your ads

UGC-style creator videos are best for prospecting and for products that need a demo or a reason to believe. Premium products, launches and retargeting often need lifestyle ads videos as well. We compare the two in UGC ads vs studio ads.

Creator videos also work best when the person making them sits close to the person spending on them. That is why we keep performance ads videos and performance marketing in one team: the numbers from last night's ads shape tomorrow's script.

Questions

What is the difference between a UGC ad and an influencer post?

With an influencer post you are paying for the creator's audience. With a UGC ad you are paying for the video, which your brand then runs as a paid ad to the audience it chooses. Follower count matters a lot for the first and very little for the second.

What decides how much UGC ads cost in India?

Mainly the number of creators and videos, whether scripting and editing are included, how long and where you can use the videos, and whether partnership ad access is part of the deal. Videos with longer paid usage rights and several edited variations cost more than one raw testimonial.

Do creators in UGC ads need to say it is sponsored?

Yes. Under ASCI guidelines, a creator with a material connection to the brand, including payment or free product, must disclose it clearly and upfront, for example with #ad or #collab. Any claim made in the video still has to be true and backed up by the brand.

How many UGC videos does a D2C brand need to start?

Enough to test real differences: several creators and several hooks, not one polished video. One good shoot can be cut into many variations, so plan briefs with multiple hook lines from the start.

Should I use a UGC platform or an agency?

A platform works if you have someone in-house who can write ad briefs, judge footage and read Meta results. If you do not, an agency that both makes the videos and runs the ads stops the creative and the results from drifting apart.
