WhatsApp Catalog Ads for D2C Brands in India: A Starter Guide

How to send Meta ad traffic into a WhatsApp chat where buyers can browse your catalogue and order, and how to tell if it beats your website.

What a WhatsApp catalog ad actually is

There is no single ad type called a WhatsApp catalog ad. When founders use the phrase, they mean a Facebook or Instagram ad that opens a WhatsApp chat instead of your website, plus a product catalogue inside that chat so the buyer can browse and order without leaving WhatsApp.

The ad brings the person in. The catalogue and the chat do the selling. Most brands get the ad right and the chat wrong, so this guide spends more time on the chat.

There are three common setups. Pick one based on how many products you sell and how many chats your team can handle.

SetupHow it worksBest for
Click-to-WhatsApp ad + catalogue in the chatA normal video or image ad. The first reply in WhatsApp shares a product or a short list from your catalogueMost brands starting out
Catalogue attached to the adWhere Meta offers it in your account, products from a catalogue set show in the ad and carry into the chatBrands with a clean, synced Meta catalogue
WhatsApp Business app catalogue onlyProducts listed on your WhatsApp Business profile, chats handled by hand on a phoneVery small catalogues and low daily chat volume

What you need before you launch

  • A WhatsApp Business account linked to your Facebook Page. For any real volume, use the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) through a provider instead of the phone app. Then more than one person can reply and you can automate the first message.
  • A catalogue in Meta Commerce Manager. The WhatsApp Business app lets you list up to 500 products by hand. On the API, the catalogue lives in Commerce Manager. Sync it from your online store so price and stock stay correct.
  • Clean product data. Short names a buyer would type, clear first images, the right price and a link to the product page. A wrong price in chat costs you trust fast.
  • Someone who replies. Automation can send the first message and the catalogue. A person still needs to answer size, colour, delivery and COD questions within minutes during ad hours.
  • A way to log orders. Chat orders have to reach your store or order sheet with a tag that says they came from WhatsApp. Without it you will never know if the ads paid for themselves.

Setting up the campaign in Ads Manager

Menu labels shift every few months, but the logic stays the same.

  • Choose the Sales objective, not Traffic or Engagement. Meta then looks for people likely to start a chat and buy, not people who just tap.
  • Set the conversion location to WhatsApp (under message destinations) and pick the business number.
  • Write a pre-filled message that tells you which ad the person came from, for example "Hi, I want to see the cotton kurta sets". It also makes the first reply easier to automate.
  • Use the creative you already know works. A short vertical video showing the product in use still does the heavy lifting. See video ad hooks for the first three seconds.
  • Start with one campaign and broad targeting. Let the creative find the buyer, the same way it does for website ads.

The first five minutes in the chat decide the sale

The ad only earns a chat. What happens next decides whether WhatsApp beats your website or loses to it.

  • Reply instantly with the product they asked about. Send a single product message or a short multi-product list from the catalogue, not a link to your homepage.
  • Ask one question, not five. "Which size do you need?" moves the sale. A long menu of options stalls it.
  • Answer the real worries upfront. Delivery time to their pincode, the return or exchange policy, and whether COD is available.
  • Make paying easy. In India the WhatsApp Business Platform supports order and payment messages, so a buyer can pay by UPI inside the chat through a supported payment gateway. If you offer COD, confirm the order in the chat and send a confirmation message before you ship.
  • Follow up once, kindly. If someone added items and went quiet, one reminder the same day is fair. Three is spam.

Which products suit WhatsApp, and which do not

WhatsApp works when a buyer has a question before they pay. When they have none, it slows things down.

Usually suits WhatsAppUsually better on the website
Jewellery, ethnic wear, sarees, where buyers want more photos or a video callLow-priced repeat items where people already know what they want
Products that need sizing or fit adviceLarge catalogues where buyers browse and filter for a long time
Higher-priced first orders where trust is the problemBrands with nobody to reply in the evening, which is when most chats arrive
Tier 2 and Tier 3 buyers who prefer to talk before paying or ordering CODStores with a fast, trusted checkout that already converts well

How to measure it honestly

Most guides skip this part. A purchase made inside WhatsApp does not fire your website pixel. If you do nothing, Ads Manager will show chats started and no sales, and you will switch off something that may be working.

There are two fixes. First, send purchase events from chat orders back to Meta with the Conversions API for business messaging, which most WhatsApp API providers support. That lets the Sales campaign learn who actually buys. Our Meta CAPI tracking guide covers the basics of server-side events.

Second, tag every WhatsApp order in your store and check it against ad spend every day. Compare cost per purchase and confirmed orders after COD returns, not cost per chat. A cheap chat that never buys is not cheap.

What the messaging side costs, in plain terms

You pay Meta for the ad as usual. Messages are billed separately on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Since July 2025, marketing, utility and authentication templates are charged per message delivered.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads come with a useful rule. When someone starts a chat from the ad and you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens for 72 hours. Messages you send in that window, including templates, are not charged. After it closes, follow-ups are billed per message, so your team should try to close the sale inside those three days.

Your API provider also charges its own fee, so read their pricing before you pick one.

Common mistakes we see

  • Running it with the Traffic objective. You get plenty of "hi" messages and very few buyers.
  • Sending a website link as the first reply. If they wanted the website, the ad would have sent them there.
  • Nobody replying after 9 PM, when many Indian buyers are on their phones.
  • Judging it on chats started instead of confirmed, delivered orders.
  • Turning off the website campaign to fund WhatsApp before the test has run for two to three weeks. Run both side by side. Our comparison of click-to-WhatsApp vs website conversion ads explains how to split the test.
  • Letting the catalogue go stale. A sold-out product shared in chat is a lost order and a bad first impression.

Questions

Can I run WhatsApp catalog ads with the free WhatsApp Business app?

Yes. You can link the app to click-to-WhatsApp ads and list up to 500 products in its catalogue. It suits small volumes, but only one phone handles chats, so most brands spending seriously on ads move to the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Can customers pay inside WhatsApp in India?

Yes. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, brands in India can send order and payment messages so buyers pay by UPI in the chat through a supported payment gateway. Many brands also confirm COD orders in the chat.

Will Meta Ads Manager show sales from WhatsApp orders?

Not on its own, because chat orders do not fire the website pixel. You need to send purchase events back through the Conversions API for business messaging, usually set up through your WhatsApp API provider.

Are messages free after someone clicks a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

If you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens for 72 hours and Meta does not charge for messages in that window. After that, template messages are billed per message.

Should WhatsApp ads replace my website conversion ads?

Usually not at the start. Run them side by side and compare cost per confirmed order, then shift spend to whichever wins for each product line.

How is this different from WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery?

Cart recovery messages people who already visited your store. Catalog ads bring new buyers from Meta straight into a chat, so the selling happens in WhatsApp from the first touch.
