Why Meta Keeps Disapproving Your Supplement Ads in India (And How to Fix It)

Meta reviews what your ad claims, not what you sell. Here is what gets supplement ads rejected in India, and how to rewrite them so they pass and still sell.

Meta reviews the claim, not the product

Most supplement founders think Meta has a problem with their category. Usually it does not. Protein, multivitamins, collagen, ashwagandha and gut health powders all run on Meta in India every day. What gets rejected is the promise in the ad, the picture that goes with it, or the page the ad sends people to.

Meta's automated review reads your primary text, headline, on-screen text, spoken words in the video and the landing page. It flags anything that sounds like a medical result, anything that suggests it knows the viewer's health, and anything that makes people feel bad about their body. One flagged line is enough to reject the whole ad.

So the fix is almost never a new product or a new account. It is rewriting the ad so it describes what the product is and how people use it, instead of what it will do to their body.

The five triggers behind most supplement rejections

These are the patterns we see again and again when a health brand's ads get rejected. The rewrites keep the selling point but drop the medical promise.

Personal attributes: the rule that catches most Indian ads

Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply it knows something personal about the viewer, and health conditions are on that list. The trouble is that a lot of Indian D2C copy is written as a question aimed at the viewer: "Suffering from acidity?", "Your hair is thinning?", "Diabetic and confused about sugar?". Each of these tells the viewer "we know you have this", and that is what gets flagged.

The fix is to move the focus from the viewer to the product or to a third person.

Weight loss and weight gain products also need an audience of 18 and over. If your ad set includes anyone younger, fix the age before you touch the copy.

  • Rejected: "Do you have low energy all day?"
  • Better: "Iron, B12 and folate in one tablet, for women who want a simple daily routine."
  • Rejected: "Your gut is the reason you feel bloated."
  • Better: "Why we put a prebiotic fibre and a probiotic in the same sachet."

Indian law sits under Meta's policy

Meta expects every ad to follow local law, and India has clear rules for health products. Even when Meta lets an ad through, it can still get you in trouble here. Writing to the Indian rules usually keeps you safe on Meta as well.

If you would not print a claim on your FSSAI-compliant label, do not say it in a reel. Your creators are covered by the same rules, so their scripts need the same check as your brand copy.

  • FSSAI: health supplements and nutraceuticals are regulated as foods, not medicines. The Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018 say what claims you can make, and they do not allow claims to cure, treat or prevent a disease.
  • Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954: bans ads that promise to cure or treat the diseases listed in its schedule. Diabetes, obesity and sexual health conditions are some of the ones supplement brands most often run into.
  • ASCI code: needs claims to be truthful and backed up, and needs influencer content to be clearly labelled as an ad. ASCI also has specific guidelines for health and wellness claims.
  • AYUSH products: Ayurvedic and herbal brands sold under an AYUSH licence have their own rules. Do not mix drug-style claims into a product sold as a food supplement, or the other way round.

Your landing page can get a clean ad rejected

Meta checks the page your ad sends people to. A careful ad that links to a product page saying "clinically proven to cure joint pain" can still be rejected, and the reason in Ads Manager will not always point to the page.

Go through the product page as if it were the ad: the title, the bullet points, the review carousel, the FAQ and any pop-ups. Customer reviews that you put on display count as your claims. If a review says "this cured my thyroid", take it out of the featured reviews. Check the page title and meta description too, since they are part of what gets read.

If your online store shares one product description across your website, Amazon and Flipkart, update it everywhere. Marketplaces have their own claim rules too, and a single clean version saves you from fixing it again later.

How to fix a rejected ad, step by step

Every rejection counts against your ad account. If enough of them pile up, Meta can restrict the account itself, and that is a much bigger problem than one paused ad. If you are already there, read how to recover a disabled Meta ad account in India.

  • Open Account Quality, not just Ads Manager. It shows the policy Meta named and lets you request a review.
  • Find the exact line. Check the primary text, headline, video captions, words spoken in the video, text on the thumbnail and the landing page. Spoken claims in a creator video are a common thing to miss.
  • Decide: edit or appeal. If the ad really makes a medical, timed or personal claim, edit it. Ask for a review only when you are sure the ad is clean and the automated check got it wrong.
  • Edit the existing ad if you can, instead of uploading the same thing again under a new name. Keeping on duplicating rejected ads adds to your record of violations.
  • Fix the pattern, not just the one ad. If one hook got rejected, every ad using that hook will too. Rewrite the whole set before the next launch.
  • Keep a list of words and visuals you have banned and share it with whoever writes scripts, briefs creators and edits your videos.

Writing supplement ads that pass and still sell

Clean copy does not have to be dull. The best supplement ads we make sell on things Meta has no issue with: what is in the product, how it fits into the day, how it tastes and mixes, and why the brand made it the way it did.

On video, the hook does the most work. Swap "Do you have hair fall?" for something visual, like a creator shaking the bottle, a sachet going into a glass of water, or a close look at the ingredient list. Our guide to video ad hooks that stop the scroll has more ideas, and how to write a UGC ad script shows how to keep creators away from claims when they speak off the cuff.

  • Lead with ingredients and amounts: "500 mg KSM-66 ashwagandha per capsule" tells the buyer more than "beat stress".
  • Sell the routine: morning shake, post-gym scoop, a tablet with dinner.
  • Show the product in use: texture, taste reactions, mixing, packaging, how many days a pack lasts.
  • Use proof that is not a health claim: where it is made, lab testing of the batch, FSSAI licence, how the formula was put together.
  • Brief creators in writing: no "cured", "fixed", "lost X kg" or "my doctor said". Have someone review every take before it goes into the edit.

When the problem is the account, not the ad

Sometimes a brand fixes every ad and still struggles. Look at Events Manager and Account Quality for any notice about health and wellness restrictions on your pixel or data. Meta has been limiting how some health businesses can share and optimise for purchase events, and if a notice like that applies to you, the answer is cleaner data and a different campaign setup, not new copy. Our Meta CAPI tracking setup guide explains how to send clean, consented data.

Also check what your page and business are categorised as, and whether old rejected ads are still sitting in the account. Archive anything you will not fix, so the account's history stops growing.

Questions

Can I run ads for supplements on Meta in India at all?

Yes. Supplements are allowed. Meta rejects the claims, visuals and targeting around them, such as cure or treatment promises, before and after images and copy that implies it knows the viewer's health condition.

Why was my supplement ad rejected when a competitor runs the same claim?

Review is automated and not always consistent, so some ads get through for a while. When the claim is found, both ads face the same rule, and you do not want your account carrying that risk.

Should I request a review or just edit the ad?

Edit it if the ad makes a medical, timed or personal claim, because a review rarely overturns a real violation. Ask for a review in Account Quality only when you are confident the ad is clean.

Do creator and UGC videos follow the same rules?

Yes. Meta reads the spoken words and captions in the video, and FSSAI and ASCI rules apply to influencer content too. Brief creators in writing and check every take for claims.

Can repeated rejections get my ad account disabled?

They can. Each rejection adds to the account's record of violations, so fix the pattern across all your ads instead of uploading the same claim again under new names.
