Amazon Ads vs Meta Ads: Which to Prioritise for Your D2C Brand in India
Amazon Ads catch buyers who are already searching. Meta Ads create buyers who weren't. Which one comes first depends on where demand for your product already exists.
The short answer
If shoppers already search Amazon for your product type by its generic name (protein powder, cotton kurti, steel bottle), start with Amazon Ads. That demand already exists and you only need to show up in it.
If your product is new, different or needs explaining before someone wants it, start with Meta Ads. Nobody searches for something they don't know exists, so you have to put it in front of them.
Most brands selling on both end up running both. The real question is which one gets your time, creative and stock first, and what has to be true before each one is worth paying for.
How each platform finds a buyer
The two platforms do opposite jobs. Amazon matches an ad to a search someone has already typed. Meta decides who sees your ad mostly from the ad itself, so the video does the targeting.
| Amazon Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How the buyer arrives | Types a search on Amazon | Scrolls Reels, Feed or Stories |
| Main ad types | Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display | Video and image ads, catalogue ads |
| What wins the auction | Keyword relevance, bid, listing quality, reviews | The creative, the offer, a clean purchase signal |
| Who owns the customer | Amazon. You don't get the phone number or email | You do, if the sale happens on your own website |
| Main cost to you | Ad spend plus marketplace fees on every order | Ad spend plus your own shipping, COD and returns |
| Main risk | Paying for clicks on a listing that can't convert | Paying for reach with creative that doesn't stop the scroll |
Five questions that decide which comes first
- Is there search demand on Amazon? Type your category into the Amazon search bar and look at the suggestions. If buyers search the generic term, Amazon Ads can capture them. If the suggestions are unrelated, you'll be creating demand, which is Meta's job.
- Is your listing ready to convert? A listing with few ratings, weak images and no A+ content turns Amazon ad clicks into wasted spend. Reviews come before scale on Amazon.
- Do you need the customer for repeat sales? Consumables like skincare, supplements and food earn their money on the second and third order. If repeat matters, you want those first orders on your own store, where you can reach the buyer again on WhatsApp and email.
- Which channel leaves more margin per order? Work out what is left after marketplace referral, closing and fulfilment fees on Amazon, and after shipping, payment, COD and return costs on your own website. The channel with more contribution margin per order can afford a higher cost per purchase.
- Can you make ads video every week? Meta needs a steady supply of new creative to avoid fatigue. Amazon Sponsored Products run on your listing, so they need much less creative to start.
When Amazon Ads should come first
Start with Sponsored Products on your best sellers. Run automatic campaigns to find the search terms that convert, then move the winners into manual campaigns with exact match. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display need Brand Registry, which needs at least a filed trademark application with IP India. File it early, because those formats protect your brand searches from competitors.
- Your category is searched by its generic name and Amazon shows plenty of buying intent for it.
- You already have a decent number of ratings and a listing that converts organic traffic.
- Your own website is new, has little traffic, and its checkout and trust signals still need work.
- You sell low-ticket or replenishable items where buyers prefer Amazon's fast delivery and easy returns.
- You don't yet have the team to produce fresh ads video every week.
When Meta Ads should come first
Before scaling, make sure your store and tracking are ready. Use our website conversion checklist and set up Meta CAPI tracking so Meta learns from real purchases, not clicks.
- Your product needs a demo or a reason to believe: a new ingredient, a new format, a design that has to be seen.
- Your category is crowded on Amazon with low-priced sellers, and you'd lose on price in a search results page.
- Your margin depends on repeat orders, so owning the customer is worth more than one cheap sale.
- Your brand sells on look and story: fashion, jewellery, home decor.
- You can produce performance ads videos and lifestyle ads videos regularly.
Running both: how they feed each other
Meta Ads create demand that doesn't always land on your website. Someone sees your Reel, remembers the brand name, and searches for it on Amazon a few days later because they trust the delivery. That's normal behaviour for Indian shoppers, and it means Meta often works harder than its own dashboard shows.
Amazon Ads then protect that demand. If you don't bid on your own brand name on Amazon, a competitor can put their product above yours on the exact search your Meta ad created.
- Run a Sponsored Brands campaign on your brand name once Meta spend starts. Branded searches are usually cheap to win, and it stops competitors taking them.
- Watch branded search volume and organic orders on Amazon when you raise or cut Meta spend. If they move together, Meta is feeding Amazon.
- Keep Meta traffic pointed at your own website by default. Sending Meta ads to Amazon weakens Meta's learning, because the purchase happens where your pixel can't see it.
- Keep prices consistent across both. A cheaper Amazon price trains your Meta audience to leave your site and buy there.
What to fix before spending on either
Most wasted ad spend comes from sending paid traffic to a page that isn't ready. Fix the page first, then buy the traffic.
- Amazon: clear main image on white, lifestyle and size images, A+ content, a title with the words buyers actually search, the Buy Box, stock in the right fulfilment centres, and enough ratings to look safe.
- Your own website: fast mobile pages, COD and UPI at checkout, clear shipping and return information, reviews on the product page, and purchase tracking that matches your store orders.
- Both: the same product names, images and prices, so a buyer who moves between them recognises the brand.
How to read results without fooling yourself
Amazon reports ACOS: ad spend as a share of the sales it attributes to ads. Meta reports ROAS on its own attribution window. Neither number can be compared directly, and both platforms will claim credit for some of the same buyers.
Judge the business, not the dashboards. Track total revenue across your website and Amazon, total ad spend across both, and contribution margin after all fees. If you raise spend on one platform and total margin goes up, the extra spend is working. Our guide on contribution margin vs ROAS explains the maths, and Meta attribution windows explains why Meta's numbers move when the window changes.
Give each platform a fair test. On Amazon, it takes a few weeks of search term data before manual campaigns are worth tightening. On Meta, judge creative, not single days, using a proper creative testing framework.

Questions
Should a new D2C brand in India start with Amazon Ads or Meta Ads?+
If buyers already search Amazon for your product type and your listing has reviews, start with Amazon Sponsored Products. If the product needs explaining or you depend on repeat orders, start with Meta Ads sending traffic to your own store.
Can I run Meta Ads to my Amazon listing?+
You can, but it usually isn't the best default. Meta can't see the purchase on Amazon, so it optimises for clicks instead of buyers, and you don't get the customer's details for repeat sales.
Do I need Brand Registry to run Amazon Ads in India?+
Not for Sponsored Products, which any eligible seller can run. Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display, A+ content and a Brand Store need Brand Registry, and a filed trademark application with IP India is enough to apply.
Why did my Amazon sales go up when I started Meta Ads?+
Many shoppers see a brand on Instagram and then search for it on Amazon because they trust its delivery and returns. Bid on your own brand name on Amazon so that demand doesn't go to a competitor.
Is ACOS on Amazon the same as ROAS on Meta?+
Not quite. ACOS is ad spend divided by attributed sales, roughly the inverse of ROAS, but each platform uses its own attribution rules. Compare total margin across both channels instead of the two dashboards.
