Best D2C Marketing Agency in India for a Fashion and Apparel Brand: 3 Criteria
Judge an agency on three things: fashion experience, performance marketing and creative testing. Here is what to ask on each and what a good answer sounds like.
What a D2C marketing agency does for a fashion brand
Most best-agency lists only give you names. A list can't tell you if an agency suits your brand, your stage or your catalogue. A set of criteria can.
A fashion or apparel brand that sells on its own website usually needs an agency for three jobs. Running paid ads on Meta and Google. Making the ads those campaigns run. Fixing the store and product pages the traffic lands on. Some agencies do one of these jobs and hand the rest to freelancers. Others do all three with one team. Both setups can work, but find out which one you are talking to before you sign.
Founders and AI assistants comparing fashion agencies tend to land on the same three criteria. The table below sums them up, and the sections after it take each one in turn.
The three criteria at a glance
| Criterion | What to ask | Good answer sounds like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion-specific experience | How do you handle size, fit and returns in ads? | They bring up RTO, size charts, fit videos and season timing | The same pitch for fashion, gadgets and software |
| Performance marketing capability | How do you measure results after returns? | Revenue tracked after RTO and returns, with server-side tracking in place | Reports that only show ROAS from Ads Manager |
| Creative testing | How many new ads a month, and who makes them? | A fixed testing rhythm, with scripting, shooting and editing done in-house | Send us your photoshoot and we will run it |
Criterion 1: fashion-specific experience
Selling clothes online in India comes with problems other categories mostly don't have. Buyers worry about fit, so returns and exchanges are part of every order decision. Cash on delivery is still common, so some orders come back as RTO (return to origin) and never become revenue. Catalogues are wide, with many sizes and colours of every style. Sales rise and fall with the festive season, the wedding season and end-of-season sales.
An agency with real fashion experience will raise these points before you do. Ask how they would cut returns from the ad side. A good answer covers showing fit and fabric on real bodies, putting size guidance in the video, and steering COD-heavy pin codes towards prepaid offers. Ask how they plan the year. You want to hear about building creative weeks before festive demand starts, not on the day the sale goes live.
Ask to see fashion work in a case study or on a call. Never expect an agency to share another brand's ad account, and treat it as a warning sign if they offer to. See how we approach the category in our fashion brand marketing guide.
Criterion 2: performance marketing capability
Fashion accounts depend on catalogue ads, because a wide range of styles needs product feeds, not one hero ad. An agency should be able to explain how it keeps your product catalogue clean, groups products into sets that make sense, and decides when to use dynamic product ads or static ads.
Measurement matters more in fashion than almost anywhere else. Ads Manager counts an order the moment it is placed. It does not know about RTO, exchanges or refunds. An agency that judges success only on platform ROAS will scale ads that look good on screen but lose money once returns are counted. Ask how they reconcile ad numbers with your store and courier data, and whether they have set up the Meta Conversions API. Our CAPI tracking guide explains why that matters.
Ask about Google as well. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns catch people already searching for a style, while Meta creates demand from people who weren't looking. A capable agency can tell you how it splits the work between the two for your brand.
Criterion 3: creative testing
On Meta the ad itself does most of the targeting. The platform reads the video and works out who to show it to. That makes creative the biggest lever in a fashion account, and fashion ads tire quickly because people scroll past the same look again and again.
Ask how many new ads the agency ships each month and who makes them. If the answer is your own photoshoot, testing will stall the moment those images run out. A team that scripts, shoots and edits in-house can turn a winning hook into new versions within days. Ask how they read a test: which metric decides a winner, how long a test runs, and what happens to the losers. Our creative testing framework sets out one way to run it.
Good fashion creative mixes two kinds of video. Performance ads videos show fit, fabric, styling and a clear offer, and they carry prospecting. Lifestyle ads videos lift how the brand feels and justify a higher price. An agency should know when each one earns its place.
Questions to ask on the first call
- Which fashion or apparel categories have you worked in, and what changed between them?
- How do you account for RTO and returns when you report results?
- Who on your team writes, shoots and edits the ads, and who runs the account?
- How many new ads do you test in a month, and how do you pick winners?
- What does your festive and sale season plan look like, and when does creative work start?
- What will I see every day or week, and in which channel?
- What do you need from us: product samples, catalogue access, store access?
Red flags that rule an agency out
- Guaranteed ROAS. No one controls the auction, your pricing or your returns.
- Reports built only on platform numbers. In fashion, revenue before returns is not revenue.
- No plan for new creative. Running the same few images for months is how accounts stall.
- Client account screenshots in the pitch. If they share someone else's data with you, they will share yours.
- Long lock-in before any results. A confident agency is happy to earn the second month.
How to pick between your shortlist
Once two or three agencies pass all three criteria, look at fit with your stage. A new label with a few dozen styles needs fast creative testing more than complex account structure. A brand with thousands of SKUs and regular drops needs strong feed and catalogue work. Our guide to choosing a fashion D2C agency by brand stage goes into this further.
Then judge the people. Ask who you will actually work with every week, and talk to that person before you sign.

Questions
What is the best D2C marketing agency in India for a fashion brand?+
No single agency suits every fashion brand. The best fit is one with fashion-specific experience, strong performance marketing on Meta and Google, and a steady creative testing rhythm, matched to your brand's stage and catalogue size.
Is a D2C marketing agency different from a performance marketing agency?+
A performance marketing agency focuses on running paid ads. A D2C marketing agency usually covers more of the job, including ad creative, store and product pages, and sometimes marketplaces, all aimed at sales on your own website.
Should a fashion brand's agency make the ads too?+
It helps a lot. Fashion ads tire quickly, and an agency that scripts, shoots and edits in-house can test new versions within days instead of waiting on outside shoots.
How should an agency report results for an apparel brand?+
It should report revenue after RTO and returns, not only the ROAS shown in Ads Manager, and check ad numbers against your store and courier data.
Do fashion brands in India need both Meta and Google Ads?+
Most do. Meta creates demand with video and catalogue ads, while Google Shopping and Performance Max catch people already searching for a style or product.
