Lookalike Audiences vs Broad Targeting on Meta: An India D2C Guide

Meta now reads most audience inputs as hints, not limits. Here is when a lookalike still earns its place, when broad wins, and how to test the two fairly.

The short answer

For most D2C accounts in India with a working pixel and Conversions API, broad targeting should carry prospecting, and lookalikes are a tool for specific jobs. The jobs are a thin account, a new product line with a different buyer, or a seed so good that it is worth pointing Meta towards it.

The real question has changed. It used to be about which audience to pick. Now it is about which signals you give Meta: your creative, your conversion data and your customer lists. The audience box matters far less than it did a few years ago.

What actually changed on Meta

With Advantage+ audience switched on, which is now the default for most sales campaigns, anything you add, including a lookalike, is read as an audience suggestion. Meta starts near it and then delivers beyond it whenever it finds likely buyers elsewhere. Advantage+ sales campaigns go further and mostly ignore audience inputs, apart from a few controls.

A few settings still work as hard limits: location, minimum age, language and excluded custom audiences. Interest and lookalike inputs mostly do not. Meta also merged many narrow interests into broader groups and removed detailed targeting exclusions.

So when a founder says the lookalike stopped working, it usually never worked the way they imagined. The ad was finding its own buyers, and the creative was doing that work. On Meta the ad is the targeting.

When a lookalike still earns its place

In India, even the closest lookalike size is a very large pool of people. You are not choosing a small niche. You are choosing a starting direction.

  • A new or thin account. If the pixel has few purchases, a lookalike of a good customer list gives Meta a sensible place to start.
  • A new product for a different buyer. A men's range from a women's ethnicwear brand, or a premium jewellery line from a silver brand. Your existing pixel history points at the old buyer, and a seed of the new buyer corrects that.
  • Optimising for an event with low volume. If you optimise for a high-value purchase or a subscription that happens rarely, a lookalike of those exact buyers helps more than broad does.
  • Testing under the original audience options. If you turn Advantage+ audience off and also switch off lookalike expansion, the lookalike becomes a real boundary. It is useful for a clean read, but expect it to cap how far you can scale.

When broad targeting wins

Broad does not mean careless. You still set the country or states you ship to, a sensible minimum age, and exclusions for recent buyers if you only want new customers. Everything else comes from the ad itself.

  • The account gets a steady weekly flow of purchases, enough for each ad set to exit the learning phase without long stalls.
  • You want to scale. Narrow inputs make delivery fight for the same people, so frequency rises and the cost per purchase climbs.
  • You run several creative angles at once. Broad lets each ad find its own buyer: a demo video reaches problem-aware people, a lifestyle video reaches gifting buyers.
  • You are consolidating campaigns. Fewer, bigger ad sets give Meta more data per ad set and exit learning faster. See CBO vs ABO for structure.

The seed matters more than the setting: an India problem

Most Indian D2C seeds are polluted, and few founders check. A typical purchaser list includes cash on delivery orders that were refused at the door, returned, or placed with fake numbers. If you build a lookalike from that, or feed it to Advantage+ as a suggestion, you are asking Meta to find more people who order and then refuse delivery.

Build seeds from people who actually paid:

  • Delivered orders only, exported from your store backend or shipping panel after the return window closes.
  • Prepaid buyers as a separate list, since they tend to be the most committed.
  • Repeat customers, your clearest picture of who keeps buying.
  • Customer value lists with order value, so Meta can lean towards higher-value buyers.
  • Refresh monthly. A seed from last festive season describes last season's buyer.

The same logic applies to conversion signal

Broad targeting is only as good as the purchases it learns from. If the pixel fires on every COD order, including those that never get delivered, broad delivery learns from bad data at scale. Send purchase events through the Conversions API with good customer details for matching, and check Events Manager for duplicates and match quality. Our Meta CAPI setup guide covers this step by step.

Missing or broken tracking is the most common reason a founder decides broad does not work. The targeting was not the problem. Meta could not see who bought.

How to test lookalike against broad without fooling yourself

If the two come out close, choose broad. It is simpler to run and leaves more room to scale.

  • Use Meta's A/B test feature so the two audiences do not overlap and compete in the same auction.
  • Run the same ads in both. If the creative differs, you are testing creative, not audience.
  • Keep the same optimisation event, placements and campaign structure.
  • Let each side exit learning before you judge. Do not edit mid-test; see why edits reset learning.
  • Judge on cost per purchase and on delivered revenue from your store backend, not only on ROAS in Ads Manager.
  • Check new versus returning buyers. A lookalike can look strong because it quietly reaches past customers.

Where the effort should go instead

If the audience matters less, the creative matters more. In a broad account, each video works as a targeting signal: the hook, the person on screen, the language and the problem it names decide who Meta shows it to. A Hindi demo with a college student reaches different people from an English unboxing with a working mother, even when both run with identical settings.

So feed the account variety on purpose: different buyers, problems and formats, with fresh ads before the old ones tire. Our creative testing framework shows how to run this every week. Then keep watching the seven numbers that matter every evening: spend, revenue, ROAS, cost per purchase, CTR, CPC and purchases.

How Monastic Media helps

One in-house team in Surat scripts, shoots and edits the ads videos and runs the Meta and Google campaigns they go into, so the people who see the numbers make the next ad. See our performance marketing

Questions

Are lookalike audiences dead on Meta in 2026?

No. You can still create them. But with Advantage+ audience on, Meta treats them as suggestions and delivers beyond them, so they guide delivery rather than limit it.

Should a new D2C brand in India start with broad or lookalike?

If the pixel has very few purchases, start with a lookalike or a customer list suggestion built from real, delivered buyers. Move to broad once the account gets a steady weekly flow of purchases.

Can I build a lookalike from COD customers?

Yes, but use delivered COD orders only. Refused and returned orders teach Meta to find more people who do not pay.

How big should my lookalike seed list be?

Meta sets a small minimum, and all the people must be from one country. A bigger, cleaner list of real, delivered buyers gives a better starting point than a small mixed one.

Does broad targeting work for niche or premium products?

Usually yes, if the creative clearly speaks to the right buyer and the tracking is clean. If spend keeps going to the wrong people, fix the ad and the purchase signal before narrowing the audience.
